Renza Lewis moved to Irving in 2008, a few years after Hurricane Katrina forced to her flee her New Orleans home.

A couple family members lived here, and she stayed busy working in customer service for the North Texas Toll Authority.

When she retired, she wanted to find a way to meet people and get involved in the community, so Lewis began volunteering with the Dallas-based Senior Source, a nonprofit that serves older adults, as a foster grandparent.

“I was wasting away after retirement,” said Lewis, 60. “I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t have a set schedule for the first time in years. The Senior Source saved my life.”

Lewis is now celebrating the organization’s 60th anniversary by joining The Diamond Dance-Off, a virtual dance competition for residents of Dallas and Collin counties who are at least 60 years old.

Videos are online, where viewers will be able to vote for their favorites. Awards will be given for the most creative, first to enter, oldest person to enter and top vote-getters. Submissions are open through May 3.

Lewis said she initially planned to dance the Dougie, but her knees would not cooperate. Instead, she chose the Hitchhiker and danced to Marvin Gaye’s 1962 hit Hitchhiker, which she grew up listening to.
