Team USA Road to London Tour to Visit DeVry University

The Olympics are coming to DeVry University!  The Team USA Road to London tour is an extension of the partnership that DeVry has established with the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC).  As we approach the Olympic Games in London this summer, the USOC is bringing an interactive Olympic experience to our extended DeVry University communities.

Attendees will be able to interact with each other in a number of fun activities, meet U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes and hopefuls, and receive some USOC and DeVry University branded merchandise.

Participate in Six Interactive Stations*:

·         Paralympic Basketball

·         Strength: Rowing

·         Speed: Table Tennis

·         Precision: Wii™ Olympic Archery Game

·         Endurance: Cycling

·         Flexibility: Photo opportunity with Weight Bar


*Complete all six stations and receive a USOC-branded item.

Shoes for Orphan Souls' Shoe Drive - May 2012

The Towers at Williams Square is teaming up with Buckner International to collect shoes throughout the month of May for children in need. In the West and East Towers you will see little red radio flyer wagons ready to be filled with new shoes for deserving children. We are seeking donations of new shoes, socks, and shoelaces. Athletic shoes, Size Youth 1 to Adult 7 are in the greatest need. Donated items should be for children and teens and due to customs regulations, shoes and socks need to be brand new.


The annual nationwide "Shoes for Orphan Souls" shoe drive is seeking to collect more than 250,000 pairs of new shoes, socks and shoestrings, with a nationwide campaign. Since 1999, Buckner has sent more than 2.2 million pairs of new shoes to vulnerable children in 74 countries around the globe, including the United States.

Heritage House Ice Cream Social and Tours - Sunday, May 6

The Irving Heritage Society will hold their general meeting on Sunday, May 6, in the front yard of the Heritage House at 303 South O'Connor.  Election and installation of officers will be at 3pm, with an ice cream social afterwards.  Tours of the Heritage House will be offered following the program.  The public is invited to attend.

Built in 1912 by C.P. Schulze, brother of one of the co-founders of Irving, the Heritage House is one of the oldest homes in Irving.  It was designated as a Texas Recorded Historic Landmark in 1986.  Admission is free. 

Many beautiful antiques are throughout the Heritage House.  Some of the furnishings include an 1840 clock, an organ (ca.1880), a square piano (ca.1860), Limoges, Sevres, and Bavarian porcelains, and many more items from the past.  The house was built with a basement, a unique feature for homes in the area.

Your organization is invited to participate in our community Fiesta on the North Lake College South Campus located at 1081 W. Shady Grove Road, Irving, TX.

Fiesta Conozca Su Comunidad is an educational fair featuring informational booths, food, live entertainment for adults and children, and children's activities. Fiesta provides a great opportunity for local businesses to showcase their services and products to community members living in South Irving. There is no charge to participate as an exhibitor. Fiesta is a great way to promote your organization!

This year, Fiesta is planned in conjunction with Earth Day. If your business supports the "going green" movement, we invite you to share your contributions and initiatives with the community.

To provide an hour for set-up and tear-down on Saturday, April 21st, your time commitment is from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. As an exhibitor, you will be provided one table and two chairs. We expect approximately 500 visitors to attend.

Irving Trivia, Esther Hurwitz Day, and Fish Fry

There are several special upcoming Heritage Society events and you will not want to miss any of them!!!

 

Saturday, April 14, at 10am in the Dupree Theater of the Irving Arts Center - 5th ANNUAL IRVING TRIVIA.  Come by to cheer on the teams as they test their knowledge about America's First Man of Letters Washington Irving as well as the history and current events of the City of Irving.

 

Sunday, April 15, at 2:30pm in the Central Library Auditorium, 801 West Irving Blvd. - "This Is Your Life, Esther Hurwitz" starring Rose-Mary Rumbley, Steven Jones, Oscar Ward, and various others.  Refreshments will be served and guests will receive a commemorative bookmark from the 2nd in the series of Honoring Women of Irving's History.  Guests are invited (but certainly not required) to bring a new or gently used book to donate to the Irving Public Library on the 15th.  Our goal is to receive 100 books for the library.

 

Born 110 years ago on April 8, Esther arrived in the Dallas area in a covered wagon along with her mother and 7 brothers and sisters.  She founded the first public library in Irving and ran it from 1941-1962.  In 1962, the City of Irving opened a municipal library on O'Connor.

 

Friday, April 20, 5pm-8pm in Heritage Park at 2nd and Main Street - 8th ANNUAL FISH FRY  .....AN EVENT NOT TO MISS!!!  All of those who have attended previous fish frys put their seal of approval on this delicious meal and great evening.  Tickets available at Clothes Quarters at 142 South Main, Mustang Museum at Williams Square, from any Heritage Society board member or call 972-252-3838. Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the gate.  Tickets for children 3-8 years are $5.  In case of bad weather, the event will be held one week later.
