Irving has an electric infrastructure that supports thousands of businesses—including more than 50 Fortune 500 companies, giants in the technical and telecom industries, and manufacturers.
A tight grid of substations allows for multiple redundancy, and Texas' deregulated electric industry offers a multitude of providers from which to choose. Major electric providers include:
- Direct Energy
- First Choice Power
- Green Mountain Energy
- Reliant Energy
- TXU Energy
Oncor is the area's electric delivery company. Irving's natural gas is supplied by Atmos Energy.
Water
Irving is working to diversify its water sources to ensure that its water supplies are secure and adequate for the next 75 years.
- Lake Chapman, East Texas. Irving's primary water source continues to be dependable, and presents no danger of running out of water.
- Lake Hugo, Hugo, Oklahoma. The Cities of Irving and Hugo have approved a tentative agreement that would allow Irving to buy approximately 22 million gallons of water per day, and additional water if it becomes available.
- Lake Pat Mayse, Paris, Texas. The City of Paris has entered into exclusive negotiations with Irving to determine the feasibility of selling water from Lake Pat Mayse to Irving. An agreement is anticipated in 2009.
- City of Dallas. Supplies approximately 15 percent of Irving's water.
Telecommunications
Irving is wired—and wireless. The city's telecom infrastructure supports business needs with hundreds of miles of fiber optics and multiple redundancies. Its major telecom providers include:
- AT&T
- Time Warner Cable
- Sprint Nextel
- Verizon
- AboveNet
