The Police and Fire Blue Christmas Organization is preparing for the season of giving. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization hosts a series of annual events in December to help raise funds and provide food and Christmas presents to Irving families and children in financial need. The organization, which has grown since its inception in 1979, relies solely on the dedication of volunteers from the Irving police and fire departments.
The families are found with the help of the Irving Independent School District and the Irving police and fire departments. Eligible children from infants to 16-year-olds receive new toys, and the families are provided dinner. Once the gifts are collected, members of the Irving Police and Fire departments help distribute them to the families. The organization will hold several events this year; see details below.
Mosaic and Blue Christmas Toy Drive
From 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6, shoppers can stop by Wal-Mart Supercenter, 4100 W. Airport Freeway, to purchase items for donation during the Mosaic and Blue Christmas Toy Drive. The nonprofit will station its collections trailer in the parking lot. A list of needed items will be available for those who wish to donate.
The organization will accept unwrapped gifts, including nonperishable food items, baby diapers, baby items, ear buds, skateboards, board games, gloves, combs and hair supplies. Residents also may drop off items at any Irving police or fire station after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Annual Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast
The Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast, which also benefits Blue Christmas, will include a pancake, bacon, sausage and beverage breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 10 at Plymouth Park Baptist Church, 1714 N. Story Road.
This annual event includes Santa’s arrival on a fire truck, a DJ, door prizes and a silent auction. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 10 and younger.
