Oriental dragon boats were full throttle at Lake Carolyn, in Irving, for the Ninth Annual DFW dragon boat, kite, and lantern festival.
Dragon boat racing originated in China over 2,000 years ago and these days’ people can’t get enough of the ancient competition. It has become a phenomenon across the world.
And now, we can thank the Marco Polo World Foundation for bringing it to our own back yard! The nonprofit charity prides itself on promoting Asian – Pacific heritage in the United States.
Over 40 teams dashed down the lake in search of the title of the 250- meter sprint. With counsel generals from Korea, China, Japan, and Mexico, the pressure was definitely on to bring the title home.
But in between the heart – pumping races and a sky filled with colorful kites, a celebration of Asian culture is taking place.
This festival has become one of the largest events focusing on diversity awareness in the Southwest.
What a way to spend Sunday – Funday!
