The Milken Institute’s annual Best-Performing American Cities report identifies the latest trends and most relevant factors powering regional growth.

The institute index uses a comprehensive, fact-based set of criteria to rank the nation’s metropolitan areas. This year’s findings reveal how technology and oil played significant roles in regional economies around the nation but in vastly different ways.

Texas two states boomed during the shale-oil revolution, but the plunge in crude prices has brought hard times to some corners of the oil patch. Still, a diversified economy kept Dallas-Plano-Irving at No. 5 in the 2015 rankings.
