The Irving Police and Fire Departments’ Blue Christmas started 35 years ago with 25 families and has since grown to serve more than 400 families each year. The organization partners with the Irving Independent School District to obtain a list of children and families in need.
The fund raising, food and toy drives begin after the Thanksgiving holiday each year when each of the 11 fire stations as well as the two police stations start accepting donations. The annual drive culminates the week before Christmas with the delivery to these families via police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and volunteers’ cars.
Blue Christmas also includes a chili cook-off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5 in downtown Irving and a pancake breakfast with the Irving Fire Department from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 12 at Plymouth Park Baptist Church, 1714 N. Story Road.
