Irving High School graduate Jose Ortiz has been named a Dell Scholar – one of 300 students nationwide. The initiative of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Dell Scholars are selected based on a different GPA – grit, potential and ambition – demonstrated through an extensive application process.

Ortiz had to explain what obstacles he has overcome, what rigorous college readiness programs he has participated in and how deeply he dreams of earning a college degree.

The scholarship includes $20,000, a laptop and textbook credits. Ortiz, an AVID student, plans to attend the University of Texas at Arlington. He was recognized at the June 22 School Board meeting.
