The Irving-based marketing arm for Mexican avocado producers joined brewers, snack makers and movie producers in trying to capture the attention of the Super Bowl watching crowd.

Avocados from Mexico, a non-profit organization, was formed in 2013 to coordinate the marketing activities for the Mexican Hass Avocados Importers Association (MHAIA) and the Association of Growers and Packers of Avocados From Mexico (APEAM).

For Sunday’s big game, the organization has spent big to air a 60-second commercial combining the anticipation of the NFL draft with a pitch on the merits of Mexican soil.

Featuring two well-known commentators Doug Flutie and Jerry Rice, the effort is meant to inspire people to buy more avocados by reinforcing year round availability.

AFM teamed with the Austin-based ad agency GSD&M to produce the commercial, which aired during the 1st quarter.

The avocados joined another North Texas food product, Doritos, in looking to capitalize on the popularity of the big game.
