This week in Austin
Lt. Governor Dan Patrick announced new Committee Chairs for the Texas Senate in the 84th Legislature. Locally, Senator Hancock Chairs the Senate Administration Committee while he sits on Natural Resources and Economic Development, and Transportation. Senator Royce West will be the Vice-Chair on the Senate’s Higher Education Committee, and he will serve on Administration, Education, and Finance. The freshman Senator from Dallas, Don Huffines will serve as the Vice-Chair of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, as well as serving on Business and Commerce, and Education Committees.

This week in D.C.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) rejected the idea of raising the gas tax to fund the Highway Trust Fund. In an interview on CBS’ news show “60 Minutes,” Speaker Boehner said, ““The biggest problem I have is that the Highway Trust Fund, which is funded by gasoline taxes, continues to shrink as cars get more and better mileage standards,” he said. “The money that’s in the Highway Trust Fund isn’t sufficient to meet the infrastructure needs of the country.” In that same interview, he hinted that he was open to alternate funding proposals however, leadership in the House and Senate have yet to openly propose an alternative funding source.
