The Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber hosted the first Monday with the Mayor event on January 12, where business leaders receive updates from the Mayor and discuss topics of interest to them.
Approximately 50 attendees received an update from both Mayor Van Duyne as well as City Manager Chris Hillman on the recent earthquakes hitting the City. They explained that the City is being proactive and have engaged the US Geological Service, the Texas Railroad Commission, SMU Engineering School, ATMOS Energy, and adjoining cities to determine where the earthquakes are happening and to help assess their impact. Beth Bowman, President/CEO of the Chamber commented that she had reached out to nearby businesses to the former Texas Stadium, and none had experienced any damage. City Manager Hillman also stated that the City has not determined any infrastructure damage, but they have reached out to ATMOS Energy to help determine any gas leaks in the City.
Other topics discussed during the meeting included an update on Water Street, transportation issues including that the reconstruction of SH-183 will begin in March, and that the Orange Line is having a positive impact including the D/FW Terminal in just its first months of operations has become one of the top 10 used stations in the DART system.
The Mayor discussed legislative priorities that the City will be pursuing during the legislative session in Austin and that Irving Day in Austin will be February 25 (contact Chamber for more information). A representative from Live Nation announced that the first performance at the Irving Music Factory’s concert venue is planned for April 2016.
The Mayor also discussed that the City is going through an update of its Comprehensive Plan and wants input from businesses and residents. Additionally, the City will be developing an economic development strategy to target specific businesses.
