To better accommodate the 250,000 visitors who come to the Valley Ranch Library on an annual basis, the facility will undergo construction to open up an additional 5,000 square feet for community use. Irving voters approved a bond sale for the repair and renovation of existing city facilities in 2012, and $1.5 million of that funding is being invested into the expansion of the Valley Ranch Library.
“When Valley Ranch customers return this spring, there will be additional tables and seating, a second quiet room, and a new digital creation lab for teens and adults that we call ‘The Green Room,’” said Library Services Director Chris Dobson. “We’ll also have a new projected floor feature where children can literally walk across an interactive coral reef complete with faux fish. When kids try and grab the fish, they will move out of the way — it’s something you’ll have to see to believe.”
After the dust settles, the renovated facility also will feature an expanded meeting room, increased shelving, a new sound-reducing wall at the end of the children’s area, and a new shade structure and patio furnishings. The space being retrofitted as part of this project is part of the building’s original construction and has remained undeveloped since the facility opened in 2007.
The Valley Ranch Library will be closed from Jan. 2 to Feb. 28 while the facility undergoes construction and renovation. The library will reopen March 1. During the closure patrons can place items on hold through the library’s catalog and pick them up later at Valley Ranch Library’s drive-up window, open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patrons can continue to drop off items through the library’s book return.
Java Me Up, the coffee shop annexed to Valley Ranch Library, will close from Jan. 6 to 10 only. Java Me Up will host the monthly book club Valley Ranch Reads! on Jan. 23 and Feb. 27 from 7 to 8 p.m.
During the temporary closure, the following Valley Ranch Library programs will meet at the nearby Cimarron Recreation Center, 201 Red River Trail:
- Mother Goose Storytime, 10:30 a.m. Mondays.
- Family Storytime, 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays.
- Sewing Class, 1:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and Feb. 9.
