Residents will soon be asked to rate their experiences with the Irving Police Department for a National Police Research Platform project.

The department is one of 100 agencies participating in a two-part research project at the University of Illinois at Chicago that aims to help improve police procedures and approaches.

The first part involves surveying police employees. The second part focuses on residents who have interactions with police.

Residents will be asked to take a survey about police contact as police reports are filed, the department said. The survey responses will be taken by UIC researchers, not the police department.

Surveys will be available in English and Spanish online or by telephone. The survey will not include domestic violence, sexual assault or juvenile crimes.
