January is Texas Association of School Boards School Board Recognition Month. District administrators, school staff, students and the community will recognize board members for their commitment and service throughout the month. A special presentation will take place at the Jan. 21 school board meeting. On Jan. 6, new superintendent, Dr. Jose Parra, will start leading the district. Dr. Parra comes to Irving from Lockhart ISD, where he has served as superintendent for six years. Before that he spent time in Seguin ISD, New Braunfels ISD, Wylie ISD and Kerrville ISD. A reception to welcome him will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Administration Building, 2621 W. Airport Freeway. On Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m., there will be aSecondary Reassignment Center open house and Springboard Demonstration School recognition ceremony. The center is at1600 E. Shady Grove Road.
On Jan. 16, the district will hold Spelling Bees in the Administration Building. They are open to the public and will be broadcast live on ISTV via cable and online. The Irving High School Cluster competes at 8:30 a.m.; Nimitz High School Cluster at 10:30 a.m. and the MacArthur High School Cluster at 1 p.m. Irving ISD will be recognized with three awards at the Texas Association of Partners in Education Awards Luncheon on Jan. 28 at the Austin Convention Center. Winning a crystal award for community partnership is the CTE Hydro-Technology Program, which is partnered with Irving Water Utilities. A gold award for individual role model will be given to Linda Rivera, a parent volunteer at Lee Elementary School. Finishing as a finalist for business partnership academic impact was district partner MacArthur OB/GYN.
