By spring 2014, bookworms will have more wiggle room at Valley Ranch Library as 5,000 square feet of undeveloped space undergoes renovation.

To better accommodate the 250,000 visitors who come to the Valley Ranch Library on an annual basis, the facility will undergo construction to open up an additional 5,000 square feet for community use. Irving voters approved a bond sale for the repair and renovation of existing city facilities in 2012, and $1.5 million of that funding is being invested into the expansion of the Valley Ranch Library.

“When Valley Ranch customers return this spring, there will be additional tables and seating, a second quiet room, and a new digital creation lab for teens and adults that we call ‘The Green Room,’” said Library Services Director Chris Dobson. “We’ll also have a new projected floor feature where children can literally walk across an interactive coral reef complete with faux fish. When kids try and grab the fish, they will move out of the way — it’s something you’ll have to see to believe.”

After the dust settles, the renovated facility also will feature an expanded meeting room, increased shelving, a new sound-reducing wall at the end of the children’s area, and a new shade structure and patio furnishings. The space being retrofitted as part of this project is part of the building’s original construction and has remained undeveloped since the facility opened in 2007.
