The City Council is expected to vote on the Board of Health’s recommendation to amend the current smoking ordinance, which would prohibit smoking in restaurants, bars, sports cafes, outdoor patios, bingo parlors and all health care facilities, at its 7 p.m. Sept. 19 meeting at City Hall, 825 W. Irving Blvd.

Exceptions to the ordinance include tobacco-related businesses, designated smoking rooms in hotels and existing outdoor patios that allow smoking. If the ordinance passes, restaurant owners of these patios would be required to supply ashtrays, and the exception would cease if there was a change in use or occupancy. The city’s smoking ordinance, last revised in 2006, currently allows smoking in restaurants with a clearly marked smoking section and health care facilities, with the exception of hospitals.

Individuals wanting to speak on the agenda item will need to register between 6 and 7 p.m.
