Community leaders are asked to contribute columns for Neighborsgo papers to provide residents with the latest news. Here’s the column from Irving ISD board president Steven Jones that ran in Friday’sIrving/Coppell Neighborsgo:
“There is excitement in Irving ISD schools. We had a very successful start to the year as our teachers eagerly welcomed 33,762 students on the first day of school. By the fifth day, Irving ISD’s enrollment climbed to 34,877 — an addition of 1,115 students in the first week. The board is thrilled that families are moving into Irving and choosing our public school system. We are focused like a laser beam on student achievement. We believe that every child can learn, and Irving ISD is committed to ensuring that each student will achieve his or her highest potential. After a summer of intense work, a team of curriculum experts and talented teachers developed a new, custom-designed curriculum for the students of Irving ISD. I am so excited that we have a curriculum specifically designed for the students of our community. This is an example of local control working at its finest. With a custom-designed model, we are able to consider our individual students’ needs, strengths and weaknesses. Our teams of curriculum writers were able to customize the scope and sequence and identify resources that give teachers and students the tools they need for success. The teamwork and individual contributions that went into this massive effort are a source of pride for Irving ISD.”
