In far south Irving, the first phase of Irving’s tree farm took root Saturday morning. About 100 volunteers from ADT , a home security company, showed up bright and early to plant 185 trees for the first of a six-phase tree farm.

“We’ve been working on this project for about two years,” said Mike Griffith, Parks Superintendent and City Arborist. “It’s a project to grow trees here and then move them to city parks in about two to three years.”

The focus on trees has helped Irving earn recognition as a Tree City for four years in a row. Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, the Tree City USA program provides direction, technical assistance, public attention and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs across the country. More than 3,000 cities have earned the designation.
