Four of Singley Academy’s Girl’s of Technology (GOT) will expand on their passion for engineering through the University of Arizona’s Summer Engineering Academy and won’t have to spend any money out of pocket to get there.
2013-2014 seniors Lesly Hernandez, Alondra Rios, Rubi Garcia, and Cindy Martinez will attend the Summer Engineering Academy the week of June 23-28 and aiding in the cost to the district is the local chapter of the University of Arizona Alumni, the La Buena Vida Foundation, an Irving-based non-profit organization which helps support the students of Irving ISD, and the University of Arizona’s College of Engineering which provided scholarships.
The Summer Engineering Academy focuses on the mining industry and will introduce to the first principles of mining engineering, starting with mineral exploration, mine safety procedures, and blasting. They will also be able to learn about the design and operation of a surface mine, an underground mine, mineral processing, and the sustainability of mining. This will be the first year for Irving ISD students to participate in the weeklong residential camp.
