Longtime Irvingite Tom Ortiz was honored at the City Council meeting with the High Spirited Citizen Award. The award recognizes those who give over and above to Irving. Ortiz started giving back in high school when he helped others at Lee Park Recreation Center, a favorite hang-out. He is a past president of Georgia Farrow Recreation Center’s Advisory Council and still serves on the center’s board. For his contributions to the city’s recreation centers, he received the Parks and Recreation Super Star Award in 2000. Over the years, he developed a passion for theater and currently serves as president of ICT MainStage. He works tirelessly for the theater company, often as a stage manager and a producer. He is vice president of production for the Column Awards, the annual tribute to local theater often held at the Irving Arts Center. He’s a past recipient of the Column Award’s Rudy Seppy Volunteer Award, which is given to a dedicated theater volunteer. Ortiz also is a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity Advisory Board for Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
