It was brisk outside this morning and many students were shivering. But it’s not often that you get a chance to walk next door to honor the person your school is named after. Right after school started, all 900 or so students at J. O Davis Elementary School headed over to the home of Josie Ophelia Davis, which now sits in the Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center. They listened to a brief history of the Bear Creek teacher given by their principal, John Ringhauser, as he stood on the porch of Davis’s home. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Texas Pledge, the students sang happy birthday to Davis, who was born on Feb. 24, 1884. The tradition started about seven years ago by Ringhauser, who wanted students to learn about about their community and their school’s namesake. Davis made an impact on her students not only as their teacher but as their mentor.
