Students at North Lake College are doing their part to give back during the holiday season. They’ve sent holiday cards to the troops, collected food for Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas and recently filled an entire empty office with donations for Terrell State Psychiatric Hospital. The college also gives back and helps students by operating the Blazer Student Store. Students experiencing a hardship are given Blazer Bucks or Blazer Food Vouchers to purchase items. Every December, each student is given $30 worth of Blazer Bucks to shop for holiday needs. One student, Regina Fischer, volunteers in the store. She says, “Helping others puts my life in perspective…spending time in the store has helped me considerably with my own personal struggles.” Psychology professor Enrique Otero said he doesn’t offer extra credit for doing community service but hopes students do it out of “genuine goodwill.” The semester winds down for students with final exams Monday through Wednesday. The campus will close for the holidays Dec. 21.
