Irving ISD student and Mayor for the Day Maddie Ojeda got to meet Gov. Rick Perry since he was in Irving at the Omni Mandalay Hotel to attend the North Texas Governor’s Luncheon. The event benefits the United Negro College Fund, which provides scholarships for low-income college students who are residents of the participating states. UNCF’s scholarships are an important part of any statewide effort to narrow the educational attainment gap. In addition to the governor’s keynote address, Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne welcomed guests andUNCF CEO Dr. Michael Lomax gave remarks. Th program also included a musical performance byWiley College’s award winning choir and video messaging from UNCF students.
