Beth Bowman, a mother of two, chamber executive, IOM grad, and West class advisor, is active in civic groups in her community, and is the Chief Development Officer for the 5-star accredited Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce. Bowman currently serves as a Class Advisor for West Institute and had the pleasure this past July to advise West Institute Graduating Class of 2012. Her volunteering at West Institute has presented a great opportunity for her to meet with other chamber executives from around the globe.
Being a Class Advisor also provided a number of opportunities which helped tune her individual leadership skills. Bowman’s most rewarding part of the institute has been the relationships created. Through social media and other technology resources, these relationships continue to strengthen and provide IOM graduates with an industry expert group that chamber and association leaders can continue to utilize as opportunities and issues arise in their organization. Bowman explains that the students’ and returning IOM graduates’ participation is an inspiration as well as a great reminder of why certain individuals have been provided with this gift to serve as the VOICE at a local, regional, national and international level for business and association communities. The most valuable thing Bowman has learned while at the Institute is the work that has to be done.
“As a chamber or association executive, your job is never completed. There will ALWAYS be work that has to be done. The most successful leaders in the industry find a way to balance the chamber/association needs with personal needs (family/friends). It’s okay to balance both!”
